History

The Three Swans was originally called The Swan Inn and records date back to 1517. Throughout the years it has had a few face lifts but has kept some of its original features especially from the 1700s when it was turned into a coach house by a local landowner who also went on to become a partner in a coach business that ran from Manchester to London, it was renamed to The swans and later renamed The Three Swans.

In 1934 John Fothergill purchased the hotel, Who during his 18 years stay wrote a few best selling books one of which being called ‘An Innkeepers Diary’ – fothergill was then portrayed in a bbc drama in 1981 called ‘Playhouse’.

It is also said that The Three Swans is mentioned in the doomsday book.

 

Reported Activity

There is a portrait of john Fothergill that is hung on the wall and apparently whenever someone moves it disaster strikes them, from floods to nearing bankruptcy.

The Spirit of John Fothergill is said to haunt this place people hearing footsteps and a general feeling of unease and the sensation of being followed when alone
